Are scented candles a danger to your health?

Las velas aromáticas, un peligro para tu salud. Home healthy Home

Gifts that pollute? Discover the hidden dangers of some scented candles.

Giving or receiving a scented candle is a timeless gift that everyone loves. But this kind gift can become a "poisoned" gift. We explain why.

The dark side of scented candles

Lighting a scented candle is usually associated with a moment of relaxation: before going to sleep, during a yoga or meditation session to recreate a cozy atmosphere. They are the reflection of a time of pampering and relaxation for oneself. But sometimes, these relaxed moments are not as innocent as they may seem.

Do candles pollute?

The candle market is booming and we see them everywhere: in decoration stores, supermarkets or even perfume stores, scented candles are omnipresent. Design, aroma, price... there is something for all tastes, but they all share the same objective: to offer a moment of olfactory escape and create an enveloping atmosphere in our home. But be careful! An expensive price is not always synonymous with quality. Most candles on the market are made of paraffin (a petroleum product) and can release polluting substances into the atmosphere of our homes. During combustion, dyes, synthetic perfumes, acetone and benzene are released into the atmosphere, contaminating the air we breathe.

What is toxic in candles?

The main types of contaminants found in candles are terpenes and formaldehyde, also called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which oxidize during combustion and become harmful to health. According to a study ( published by the University of Michigan , these components are not recommended because they are especially irritating in cases of respiratory intolerance such as asthma. These contaminants are also responsible for endocrine pathologies such as hormonal diseases linked to thyroid dysfunction. These contaminants are also are implicated in the development of certain lung or throat cancers, the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified formaldehyde in particular on the list of "certain carcinogens."

How to use candles while preserving your health?

First of all, to be able to scent your home with peace of mind and without danger to your health, we advise you to choose natural aromatic candles, with soy wax, essential oils and without chemical products.

In general, it is important that you follow these simple tips:

1) Never let a candle burn for more than 3 hours at a time
2) Always make sure to ventilate the room where you light a candle once it has gone out. This may seem counterproductive, but the pleasant fragrance given off by the candle will have had time to settle and, by airing the room, any polluting substances that may have been left in suspension will be eliminated.

Ideally, it would be safer not to light candles in small, closed spaces... but if you find it difficult to resign yourself, opt for candles that are less polluting and less harmful to your health!
